If this is your first time planning family camping the first step is deciding where you are going to camp. I would recommend an established camp ground with all the facilities. Going with experienced friendly campers is an option, but make sure you know them well so you won’t have any compatability problems, as this can cause friction and make a mess of your first family camping trip.
If you go to a well known campground, you will know that area will be maintained to be as safe as possible. When choosing the campground, you will also want to look into what kind of activities are available locally. Usually there is plenty of free activities like nature walks, fishing, discover local history, playgrounds and area to play ball games.
Kids are great at making up their own games and they will meet others kids to play with. Also allow plenty of time to sit down, rest and read a book.

After you have chosen the ideal location, you can then begin to plan what to take with you. If you don’t already have a tent, you will need to choose the tent that will be right for your family. Go shopping and see what is available and what the best features are.

Generally there is the Dome type tents which pack up very small and are lightweight but are fiddly to put up. We prefer the canvas tents, usually called tourer tents, very easy to erect just have the usual pegs and a centre pole or side poles that push up a square frame in the roof, no outside poles apart from the verandah.

Choosing a tent is personal choice and what suits your budget, dont rush in look around first!Remember a 4 person tent is more suitable for 2 or 3 persons, a 6 person suits about 4 people.

Bedding is essential sleeping bags or sheets/doonas can be used. Sleeping bags come in various sizes for kids, adults, large adults and doubles. Sleeping bags also are rated to the different weather condiitions like, warm weather, cool weather and the freezing nights.

Mattresses are also required for a comforable nights sleep, can be anything from an exercise mat, foam, pump up air mattress, self inflating mattress or stretchers can be used.

Other camping equipment that can be used are lights or torches, cooking utensils, coolers or a fridge, food, table & chairs, clothing & shoes, first aid kit, sun hats & medications.

A checklist is essential when planning every camping trip so you don’t forget something important.Make the effort and plan to take your family camping and you will have a great adventure and you will want to repeat it again and try lots of different locations in your state and maybe venture interstate.
