Your camping holiday will be a great experience for the whole family. These setting up camping tips will help you have a camping trip with your family to remember, so you don’t have a holiday you would rather forget.

Leave home in plenty of time to arrive with at least 2 or 3 hours of daylight, preferably arriving by about 4pm. There is nothing worse than struggling in the dark setting up tents and trying to see what your surroundings are.

Select a dry level area, take a small rake with you to clear leaves and sticks if necessary. Avoid any areas that water may flow if it rains like a dry gutter or creekbed.

Look up when positioning your tent, do not set up your tent under any overhanging branches, especially gum trees. Branches have been known to crash down in storms and strong winds.

Set up your bed in the tent so your head is up hill rather than down, Very uncomfortable with your feet up higher than your head. I have tried it!! Not Good!!

If possible protect your tent from wind with trees, or your vechile, or setup a tarp for protection.

A tarp also can be used overhead for a sun or rain shelter, string it from trees, off the side of your vechile or tent, have one end higher than the other so water is not trapped in the middle and get too heavy and come crashing down.

Pay attention to all warning signs, as there maybe restrictions where to camp, about the use of campfires and collecting firewood, no swimming, about the local native animals, like dingos, crocs, emus etc.

Where do you want your campfire, don’t make it too close to tents, at least 3 metres away.

Which way do you want the tent door to face, we usually face towards the river, or towards a scenic view, if in a camp ground or caravan park usually towards the road or maybe if you have a group of tents have them in a circle with the doors inwards and a create meeting place in the middle.

It’s a good idea when setting up camp to place a ground sheet down first then your tent on top, this will keep your tent base cleaner & drier and will insulate your tent from the moisture in the ground.
