Camping activities with kids don’t all have to be camping things, like hiking, a campfire, collecting firewood and fishing, just because you’re camping it doesn’t mean that kids can’t do the things that you already do at home.

Play games that are suitable for both parents and kids depending on their age.

Play some cards like UNO or other travel games on the picnic table or in the tent.

Any type of ball game is great, we usually play cricket, football or throw a frisbee, a tennis ball is great to play with in the water.

Younger kids love art, take pencils, crayons, textas, colouring book or plain paper. Take a glue stick or clag, and get the kids to find some nature things like leaves and stick them onto paper or cardboard and add some extra colour with the textas. When your finished the mess can go back on the ground, no sweeping!

On a longer holiday for several weeks when you are going to several towns/places its a great idea to take scrapbooks or exercise books that the kids can make into a daily diary. They can add postcards or brochures of places visited or anything else interesting and write a bit about each day.

In 2000 and 2003 we went for trips for 6 weeks each time. My kids made diaries for both these trips and they have kept them and they are great to look back at, not just for what we did but how much they have grown and their handwriting has changed and they wrote some very funny things.

What are some of the activities or games your family enjoys on camping trips?
