There are many types of camping as there are types of campers. Camping can range from simply backpacking in the bush to towing a 5th wheeler around the country.
Here are some other popular types of camping.
Hiking You generally pack your backpack with all the necessary equipment to survive for several days or weeks and leave your vehicle. You don’t have access to any facilities, it allows you to enjoy the serenity of nature.
Tenting If you don’t want to abandon all modern conveniences, you can set up your tent and camp at a campground. Camp grounds vary a lot in what they offer you, some are very basic and in a bush setting like a National Park, then there is the four star Holiday Parks that provide you with every convenience.
Cabins Cabins in Holiday Parks is another way to go camping, they are excellent for the one night stays so you don’t have to drag out all your bedding, utensils etc or they are terriffic for several weeks also. Holiday Parks usually have pools and all facilities, may have mini golf, games room and more.
Caravans The choices of caravans is amazing, if you’re in the market for one have a good look around to find one that suits you needs and price range. Caravans do limit your travels to the sealed roads. If you have a 4WD vehicle and a normal caravan you can leave the caravan in storage at a holiday park for a few days and take off in the 4WD with some basic camping equipment and supplies.
4WDriving Is an exciting way to go camping, getting off the highways onto the dirt or gravel, sometimes rocks and river crossings. Usually the car is only put into 4WD only when necessary, but when you travel these roads the vechile needs to have the extra strengh in its chassis, wheels, body etc to cope with the extra roughness of the roads.
Camping in 4wd areas is amazing, last year my family drove around eastern Central Australia, we camped with Chambers Pillar only several hundred metres away, at William Creek Hotel and other amazing places. This type of camping does need extra planning and equipment.
RVs Some campers choose to have an recreational vechile like a 5th wheeler, which are very convenient, pack up and go and tow your bedroom, living room, kitchen, bathroom etc with you. But not every one wants to tow such a large vechile and would prefer to be in the outdoors more, thats where camper trailers fit in.
Camper Trailers There is an amazing range of camper trailers, they give you the best of both worlds, towing a much smaller trailer and you still have some conveniences with you depending on the type of camper trailer, the can start from about $4000 for a flip over canvas style up to $50,000 or more for the fibreglass 4wd models.
Canoe or Boat Canoe or boat camping is similar to backpacking, but canoes or small boats for transportation. Usually would be on a river and each night camping on the bank. Carrying all supplies with them including tent, bedding, food, fishing rods etc. They may have organised a support crew to meet them at several points along the way.
Cycling When we have been driving & camping around the top end of Australia we have quite often gone past cyclists (sometimes alone) in the middle of nowhere, sometimes they were at least a hundred kms from the nearest town. This would have to be one of the hardest ways to see Australia, but also it is probably most rewarding as you see and notice a lot more.
Can you add more types of camping to this list?
