When you are first learning how to camp, and even when you are an experienced camper its important to book ahead your campsite or you may miss out and the campground will be full, most popular campgrounds fill very quickly by late afternoon.
If you are staying at a campground more than a day it’s amazing to watch the wave of campers that leave in the morning and then quickly fill by nightfall, there is usually someone bumbling around in the dark setting up there camp. Try to get to your destination by about 4pm so you can setup and sit down and recover from a long days travelling.
Select the campground you are interesting in staying at and phone them to find out if a site is available for you, at the very popular parks phone a month ahead at least or more would be better. Especially if you are travelling in school holidays and public holiday weekends like Easter. The last thing you want after you have driven for hours is find all campgrounds full and it does happen, we have had to resort to staying at motels.
Make sure you have a good map with names & phone numbers of all the places, parks, tourist information offices you intend to visit on your trip. The tourist information offices are in most resonable size towns in Australia, if you know nothing much about the town you are visiting the tourist information should be your first stop, they will be able to answer your questions and book accommodation for you if necessary and they will have many brochures of the local attactions.
