When you are camp cooking and have a campfire you can use a camp oven (dutch oven) to cook many types of food, like stews, roasts, cakes, dampers & breads etc
Camp ovens are an old and reliable method for camp cooking, the following tips will help you cook with your camp oven.
When you are cooking with the camp oven check it fairly often, lift the lid to see how hot it is, if it needs more heat add some more coals around it or on the lid.
If steam is escaping out the from under the lid the oven is too hot and contents maybe boiling or burning, remove it from heat for a short time
Check and turn the camp oven about every 15 to 20 minutes so that the heat is more evenly distributed. So that one side is not getting more heat than the other.
Rotate the oven about 90 degrees and rotate it clockwise each time so the heat is evenly distributed after four turns the camp oven has done a full rotation.
Use an oven mitt or thick dry towel when handling the camp oven as the metal gets extremely hot and stays hot for awhile after being removed from the heat
Also a hook is useful for dragging or lifting the camp oven when hot, to make one easily use a solid tent peg and tape the straight end of peg to a reasonably straight strong stick, make it as short or long as you want it.
