Here is a guide of necessary equipment when you are going backpacking or hiking in the bush for a few days. When you are packing think of these 4 things – Is it necessary, is it compact, is it effective and is it as light as possible.

This is a guide only – Add to the checklist or remove anything not required.

A lightweight compact tent, a foam mattress like an exercise mat and a compact sleeping bag suitable for the conditions expected

First Aid Kit, medications and insect repellent

Sunglasses, sunscreen and hat or cap

Mobile phone, compass, maps

Multi tool, whistle, signal mirror

Compact LED torch, spare batteries ( windup models are available)

Waterproof matches

Water, water bottle and purifying tablets

Food – dried meat like Beef Jerky, satchels of dehydrated meals and snacks from a camping shop.

Clothing suitable for the terrain you are going too and comfortable walking boots and thick socks to absorb the moisture and to cushion your feet.

Tool kit – spare rope, duct tape etc.

Compact cooking equipment, cutlery & plate, bowl and mug

Personal Items

Optional extras – binoculars, I.D. , cash, disposable camera, emergency blanket, lighter, gloves, pocket knife, spare batteries, paper & pen, safety flare, toilet paper, lip balm, GPS or tracking device, spare rope, saw, 2 way radios.

Always notify a responsible person of where you are going and when you expect to return

Aside from the regular necessities, I think a good waterproof torch is a great idea for an overnight hiking or camping trip.
For emergencies or for those who like to be contactable, a lightweight portable mobile phone charger can get you through your trip without your phone running out of juice and can also be a lifesaver in an emergency.
Something like this is a good example:
