Here is a guide to how and what to pack when you are travelling Australia for several weeks or more and stopping several or many times. My family has done several trips for 6 weeks at a time driving from Victoria to the Top End via Central Australia; both times we moved camp about 20 times and packed it all in back of 4WD vehicle and on the roof rack and with 3 kids, so we had to pack as least we could but be comfortable.
There is of course many ways to travel, we chose to take a 4WD vehicle without a trailer as we wanted to do some 4WD when we could (if you are going 4WDriving with a trailer the trailer must be capable of taking the rough roads, many trailers get dumped when they fall apart)
There are many different vehicles (all brands and styles) used for travelling, many campers use tents other popular ways are the camper trailer of all varieties, caravans, hired campervans and motor homes and some of the more unusual ways.
Pack as least as possible, which is not easy to do as there is a lot of things required especially if you are travelling as a family. Remember an overloaded vehicle has to work harder, placing more strain on tyres and chassis etc .and increasing fuel consumption
Sort out the essentials that you must have first, use this checklist as a guide, as you may be travelling long distances and in remote areas, you must pack spare parts for your vehicle like spare wheel and repair equipment, fan belt etc and tool kit, 4WDrivers will need to be better prepared than a vehicle that is staying on the highways.
Take several containers of good drinking water, especially if you are going to remote areas as good water is not always available. Refill these containers when you find good drinking water, this will save buying bottled water.Pack enough clothes for 3 or 4 days, but include clothes for all seasons. It’s better to wear layers of clothes, peel them off as the day warms up and put them back on at night time, always include a waterproof coat or jacket for warmth or rain.
All Holiday Parks have laundrys so you can do your washing, National Parks and basic campgrounds probably won’t have a laundry.
Other things required are kitchen cooking equipment, food, drinks, tents, bedding, table, car fridge or esky, chairs, lights, torches, maps and info, kids games, luggage, mobile phones, cameras, first aid kit, medicines, personal items and anything else you require.
Here is a Basic Camping Checklist
