It’s depends on your camping situation as to what makes a good campsite and why one is better than the other. Do you prefer a quiet out of the way campsite with nature and a view or a campsite with all the amenities at a Holiday or Caravan Park.

There is generally three types of campsites – In a Holiday or Caravan Park with all the amenities, in areas like National or State Parks with basic amenities with great views and then in the bush with no amenities. We have camped in all the above and they all have their own attractions and appeal, this depends on what suits you.

Here are a few things to consider as you find a campsite, and decide whether these things are what suits you or not – remember in a busy park you may not get much choice of where to camp unless you book ahead.

If you are in a tent, camper trailer or something else that doesn’t have bathroom facilities most likely being near the amenities block is important. If you are in an RV that does have it’s own amenities than it probably won’t bother you if you are not close to the amenities block. Fortunately the bigger campgrounds or Holiday Parks have several amenities blocks centrally located to all campers.

Another thing to consider is the traffic, especially near the entrance and the main roads throughout parks.  Most of us would prefer to be away from traffic areas especially if you have kids or pets. If your kids are young and need an afternoon sleep a quiet campsite would be important.

There is of course so many different types of campgrounds anything from the very busy parks that give you a very small area to set up camp and usually not much choice of where to camp, and then there is the National or State Parks and the bush with plenty of choice and room to camp.

When you are planning to camp at Holiday or Caravan Parks you may need to book ahead as they can be busy especially in school holidays and on public holiday weekends

Look for shade and protection from wind

Check out where the amenities, playground or pool is situated

Camping near amenities is very convenient but you will probably have a lot of passing traffic

Would you prefer a Park that has drive through camp sites so you don’t have to reverse in the RV

Do you need a powered site or unpowered site – you can put a tent on a powered site if you need to recharge cameras, phones, laptops etc.

Look out for a fire pit, barbecues or a camp kitchen

If you are in a group of campers look for several sites close together

When you are bush camping without any organized campsites.  Set up on a raised flat area to avoid water runoff and also look up and avoid camping under overhanging branches especially gum trees.

The prices of camp sites can vary from free to maybe $40 per night, depending on how many people, powered or unpowered site and where you are and the ratings of the Park.

Also what makes a good campsite is you, the camper!!

Wherever you camp have a great time, can you recommend a campsite?
