Once you decided where you are going, how long you are going for and who is going you need to do some preparation and planning. That information will help you be able to work out the costs and budget. The cost of food will be generally higher when travelling, fuel and accommodation will be your main cost.

To find more information you can work out your general direction you are going and contact, tourist information centres at the towns you are visiting. There is a lot of information online search for the general area that you are visiting eg. Central Australia, Sunshine Coast.  Also government tourist and motoring websites have a lot of travelling & vehicle information.

Check what camping equipment you have and buy or borrow equipment if necessary. Check everything works and you know how to assemble and use it. This checklist will give you a guide as what can be required depending on your situation and whether you are tenting or have an RV.

Before you go let someone know where you are going give them contact phone numbers and arrange to contact them regularly. If you are heading into remote areas take extra care and plan and prepare with all situations in mind.
