A camping, holiday or travelling trip can be a wonderful experience, to keep it that way take into consideration these hints next time you enjoy the great outdoors.
Arrive at your destination before dark or even better mid afternoon so you have plenty of daylight to find your place of accommodation or setup camp if you are camping. Then you have time to relax before preparing the nights meal.
Please do not leave food scraps at picnic areas and campsites. The native animals don’t need our food. All you are doing is feeding the foxes, feral cats etc.
Always watch out for livestock on and near the roads. Especially in the ‘Outback’ & ‘Top End’ as the properties are so large that there are no fences along roadsides. Look out for cattle, sheep and horses and our native animals like kangaroos, emus etc. occasionally they can be standing on the road or running across.
Slow down when a floodway sign is displayed, there maybe no water but there is usually a sharp dip to slow down for.
Take a hose and tap connector when you are filling your water containers from a tap. This will make filling much easier than using buckets especially for camper and caravan owners.
Have some respect for the dangers of camping regarding snakes, spiders etc and take extra care up north with crocodiles, never swim where ‘crocodile’ signs are displayed. Check with locals as to where safe swimming can be done, most likely it will be in a swimming pool.
Be prepared with insect repellent as biting insects like mosquitoes can be a pest at sundown.
If you are not camping in a caravan/Holiday Park and you need to shower and wash clothes. The Parks will usually allow you to use their amenities for a small fee.
