I have climbed Ayers Rock and I found it to be the most amazing, exhilarating experience ever. We have all seen photos and heard about Ayers Rock and we can only imagine what it is like, It is actually bigger and more incredible than you can imagine.
When we were driving out to it from Ayers Rock Campground we could see it for at least 20 minutes, getting larger every minute. When we got closer it looked like ants climbing over it, of course they were people.
We are all discouraged from climbing as it is very important to aboriginal culture, but it is also a very big tourist attraction for Australia with an amazing number of aussie and international tourists visiting every year. If Ayers Rock was to be closed to climbing not as many people would visit it therefore less income for the area.
Many choose not climb for many reasons also the local authorities do stop people from climbing when the wind is strong and makes the climb dangerous. Even if you can’t or choose not to climb it is an amazing experience to see it and walk around it. If you can take a tour and you will get a better understanding of Ayers Rock – Uluru and appreciate it even more.
The climb took 1 ½ hours and 1 hour to climb down, the climb has three parts, climbing up the chain, then following a dotted line (like in the middle of a road) then we were on top and had to go up and down over the hills that the weather has created to get to the centre. Someone told our kids there was a coke machine up on top – they were disappointed No coke machine! What was at the top was the most amazing view that included the Olgas in the distance.
Then we walked around the base which it 8km, this took about 2 hours, as you can imagine we were exhausted but extremely excited.
What is your Ayers Rock Uluru experience - climbed – not climbed – walked around – admired – everything?
The above photo was taken in July 2000 when we visited Central Australia
