Camp Ovens are extremely popular and an excellent way to cook a variety of meals when camping. Camp Ovens come in various sizes and it’s worth buying a good quality one.
Most camp ovens are made of cast iron others are made or spun steel. Cast iron is usually considered the easiest to use as the heat is spread evenly and heat is retained after removing from the campfire.
Camp Ovens come in either round or oval shapes with a domed lid or flat lid with a rim around the edge.
The advantage of the flat lid is that you can place hot coals in the lid and they won’t fall off the sides or into your food when you remove the lid. This type is excellent for making bread, cake or damper so you can brown the top of whatever you are cooking. Also can be used for stews, roasts etc.
If you are interested in purchasing two camp ovens, a space saving idea is to get a smaller one that fits into the larger one.
When you are purchasing a camp oven here is a few things to look for
- Must be good quality, don’t buy it from a discount store.
- The handle on top of the lid should be a moulded loop big enough for a hook to fit under so you can lift the lid easily
- The handle should be made of strong wire and is usually looped through tabs on top edge of camp oven
- The lid of the camp oven should be a good neat fit so steam cannot escape.
Caring for your Camp Oven
You never use soapy water to clean a camp oven, just boil water in it to clean then wipe with cooking oil to stop rust and you can also put a piece of paper towel in the base as this will soak any excess moisture before the camp oven is placed in storage.
