When you are buying your backpack for your next hiking or camping trip make sure you buy a backpack that is comfortable and choose one that suits your height and weight. It’s very important that the backpack is fitted correctly, so you have a great trip.

Choose one that is the right size for your needs, usually that would be a larger one if you are planning to carry everything you need for several days or more. When packing your backpack only take what you need and no extras that you won’t use.

Packing your backpack correctly will help you immensely when you are on your hiking trip. These tips will help you pack in the right order, with the most required items at the top, then food, clothes, bedding and tent.

  • Start with your sleeping bag, should be a compact one. It goes into your backpack first as you will need it last.
  • Next the heavier items like your tent, clothes, food get packed in the middle and place them closest to your back.
  • The top should be the things you will need frequently or items you may need quick access too like first aid kit, rain gear, hat, sunglasses, jumper, map, compass, medication etc.
  • Pack your tent or other items separately instead of putting them together in bags. Pack the tent, poles, pegs, pots, pans etc so that every bit of space is used.
  • If you are carrying fuel for your stove keep the food above in case of a leak on the food.
  • Fill cooking pots, mugs, containers as much as possible with food or spare clothing so no space is wasted.

When you have finished packing put on the backpack and tighten the straps and check if it feels  right and  balanced correctly. Make adjustments if necessary.  Enjoy your next hiking or camping trip.
