Nobody wants a creepy crawlie in their bed or boots! When you are camping it’s nearly impossible to avoid all creepy crawlies, but there is  a few ways to keep them out of your way camping so you will be a lot more comfortable. Here is a few tips and hints to help you.

  • Keep your tent zipped at all times to stop bugs getting in.
  • Check the ground for ants’ nests or animal burrows before pitching your tent
  • If you find a spider in your tent sweep it out or trap it and release it away from camp
  • Always cover food and seal containers after use
  • Dispose of rubbish properly, do not leave lying around so you cdon’t attact insects, birds and animals
  • If hiking, wear ankle-high boots, thick socks and trousers to reduce the risk of snake bites and leech attack
  • If you see a snake near camp leave it alone, watch it to make sure it goes away, generally they are just passing through and are just of scared of us as we are of them
  • Do not attempt to handle any spider, even if it is small
  • Watch where you put your hands when walking through the bush
  • Don’t leave shoes or clothing outside as a insect may hide inside.  Shake before you put them on
  • Wearing gloves when you’re collecting and handling firewood will help prevent you from getting bitten by an insect etc.
  • Burn a citronella candle or mosquito coil to ward off mosquitoes
  • Use insect repellent to keep away mosquitoes and other pesty insects
  • Biting insects breed around water — set up your camp at least 100 metres away
  • Pack up food and scraps at night and when you leave camp, they attract unwelcome  birds,  possums,  insects etc
