I reccommend several checklists. We like one for the kids, they all get the same list of essentials that they need to pack, at least into a group/pile that my wife and I then verify before the final pack. It gets them involved, saves us some time, and they start to realize the benefits of putting things back in the right place to be easily foud next time.
I alos like a seperate 'kitchen' list and 'general camp' list.
We have these all in a spreadsheet we print out before each trip and can circle/check the items we want on this trip and once they are packed.

also another tip, some sort of extra smal groudcloth to lay right in front of the tent for shoes to sit on and wipe on. This will keep your tent much cleaner if your not able to keep kids from going in and out.
