Taking your dog or pets with you camping is a lot of fun and special. As they are part of your family and you don’t want to leave them at home and have someone check on them or leave them in a boarding kennel.

When you plan your holiday, whether you are staying in one location or several, check if pets are welcome. Most likely it will be easier to find accommodation that is dog friendly rather than other pets like cats, birds, rabbits etc.

There are many pet-friendly lodges, holiday houses, farmstays, cottages, B&Bs. Camping at campgrounds, Holiday Parks, Tourist Parks may be easier to find and be more suitable for camping with your pets.

Most National Parks do not allow pets, but there is a few a few that allow dogs.  Parks Victoria do allow dogs into some areas, check other states or territories National Parks for further information.

When you take your pets camping or travelling have them vet checked if you have any concerns with your pet before leaving, check that vaccinations are up to date. Desexed pets may be preferred by some accommodation places.

When taking your pets traveling be prepared to stop occasionally to give them a walk and drink and have them secured in the car with a harness or cage.

Take their familiar toys, bedding and food to make them more comfortable. Take other necessary equipment like leash, bowls, pooper scooper, collar and tag with contact details, brush etc.

Please keep your animals under control at all times so they do not annoy other campers. Please realise even though you love taking your pets not everyone else does and they really do not want a dog bounding up to them and jumping all over them especially their kids.

Enjoy taking your dog or other pets camping, choose a suitable place and take the appropriate equipment, keep or pet under control and everyone will have a great time.

Yes, we took our dog when we went camping for a couple of days. He loved it, we don’t often take him on holiday. It wore him out though, but then he is nearly 12 years old. I think he slept for 24 hours straight when they got back.

We are going to go camping again next month, near the beach at Mooloolaba. Not sure if its dog friendly yet, but if it is, we’ll take him.
