Knowing how to camp with minmal impact on the enviroment will help protect and care for the natural surroundings for many years to come. These tips will give you a few ideas for making minimal impact, if we all do our bit to help it will make a difference.

  • Use bio degradable detergents or soap and use as little as possible. Do not wash in waterways, keep at least 50 metres away from waterways when washing, this allows the water to filter through the dirt before evetually retuning to the nearby waterway.
  • Use toilets if provided, if they are not provided find a bush toilet! Walk well away from camp and waterways and dig hole about 15cm deep bury waste and toilet paper.
  • Observe rules before creating a campfire, some campsites do not allow campfires, some allow campfires but the firewood must be brought in, most national Parks have this rule. No campfires on Total Fire Ban days – check with local authorities.
  • Pick up all your rubbish and place in bins if available or take it out with you and place in bin when possible. Unfortunately not all campers pick up their rubbish, clean up the area as much as you can.
  • When pitching your tent try to set up in an established area rather than clearing a site and disturbing the area.
