Days 13 to 18 – In July 2003 my family left home for another exciting journey. Our destination was the ‘Kimberley’ in Western Australia. We travelled from Victoria to South Australia, then to the Northern Territory and to Western Australia via the Tanami Track, then did a circuit of the Kimberley including the Gibb River Road then across to Katherine and down south home on the Stuart Highway.  We travelled about 10,000 kilometres in 6 weeks.

Day 13 & 14 - We spent 2 days in Broome, we were wishing we could stay longer.

We visited Michael Douglas’s Crocodile Farm, he had all size crocs from babies  to the 4 or 5 metres like the one in this photo.

We also went to Roebuck Bay on the other side of Broome which was mudflats very different to the picturesque Cable Beach. We visited the main shopping centre, found some souvenirs, played mini golf and went back to cable each at sunset and saw the camels.

We watched the famous camel train again, they even have flashing lights on their butts.

Days 15, 16 & 17 – We left Broome and went north to Cape Leveque, this road is only 4WD access which can be done by an organised tour bus. Once again beautiful scenery, bright blue sky, red rocks and a stunning beach we had a swim in this one, which is the eastern beach.

More beautiful beach, we tried fishing in a nearby river and over the other side of Cape Leveque and caught one fish. We mostly  relaxed and did plenty of swimming.

We had decided before we left that each of us would do do some type of tour or experience. The men and boys decided theywould go barra fishing at Kunnanarra and the girls decided we would go on a charter flight over the ‘Bucaneer Archipelago’ which flies out from Cape Leveque.

These are the spectacular photos from the plane. This photo is of the ‘Horizontal Falls’ which has featured on TV travel shows. This is near Derby where the tides are 10 metres, normal tides are about 1 metre. The water rushes through the gaps in the islands as the water rises.

And another scenic view from our plane.

Days 18 & 19 – We left beautiful Cape Leveque  drove back out the 4WD  road which takes about 2 hours back then we went to Derby which is near where the Gibb River Road starts. This photo is of the ‘Boab Prison Tree’ it is enormous and was originally used to hold prisoners many years ago.

This photo is of the longest trough (120 metres long) in the southern hemisphere used by thousands of cattle as they were moved across the Kimberley.

This photo was taken at the caravan park we stayed at, this shows how big boab trees grow, it makes our car and us look tiny.

This photo shows us fishing off the Derby Jetty. Not much luck again! We could see the water flowing in over the mudflats as the massive tide came in.
